Puh - leez, PM me with his phone number, Moshe. I promise, I'll try to make sure I call him when I'm at least half-way sober. Maybe . . . I know my family bought into all that 1975 crap. My parents got baptized in the early 70's. When did they start talking about 1975 as an Armageddon date, anyway? Supposedly, it's not written anywhere . . .

. . . and while you're rubbing lemon juice and salt into your wounds, you could think about whether or not any of the restaurant employees had sex on these papers recently . . . just to get your mind off the burning pain . . .

GuestWithQuestions - Please check out the UNIFEM Gender And AIDS portal at:
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/60652.html
"Within the confines of marriage" we are NOT protected from sexually transmitted diseases, including and not limited to AIDS. Many married people in Africa have suffered horribly as the result of this silly belief.
Please do not continue to spread such nonsense ideas. Most educated adults know what you said there is complete and utter nonsense, but the young people with whom you speak on this weighty subject may not realize it. Please educate yourself on the subject before you discuss it with any other ignorant people.
Marriage is NOT insurance against AIDS or other STDs, either inside Africa or in the USA, whether you are a Jehovah's Witness or not, because one NEVER has a true guarantee that their partner is honest and faithful. Many men in Africa are forced by poverty to work far, far from home for many months, even years at a time, and do become "unfaithful" out of loneliness and isolation, and so do a number of their wives; this also happens a great deal in the western world. These are not bad people, just humans trying to live their lives in the face of great challenges and loneliness.
AIDS IS NOT A MORAL ISSUE. It is a serious health issue.

"5. Promote freedom of belief and disbelief. A higher moral principle that encompasses both science and religion is the freedom to think, believe and act as we choose, so long as our thoughts, beliefs and actions do not infringe on the equal freedom of others. As long as religion does not threaten science and freedom, we should be respectful and tolerant because our freedom to disbelieve is inextricably bound to the freedom of others to believe."
Number 5 is quite the double-edged sword, wouldn't you say, where it says, "so long as our thoughts, beliefs and actions do not infringe on the equal freedom of others"?
Since when has religion NOT been a threat to science and to freedom? Pretty much, NOT since the beginning of time.
I think my avatar suggests that we're still pretty far away from religion/politics NOT acting as a bully to the scientific community, as well as the world community. -

"Of course, freedom has natural limitations. We are not free to harm others in the name of freedom, so any religion that espouses violence to achieve their means should be discouraged.
changeling"
Sorry, changeling, but in America, at least if you're the president, you do, apparently have the right, "in the name of freedom" to "harm others." You heard of Viet Nam, the Gulf War, Grenada, and the war on terror, right?
"any religion that espouses violence to achieve their means should be discouraged." Well, changeling, don't you think that about covers all the major religions, now? Seriously. -

atheism vs anti-theism + God as height vs God as depth
by DeusMauzzim insharing some thoughts and questions while reading gott ist anders (honest to god) by john a.t robinson:.
disclaimer: if you are a biblical litteralist you might think: what is all the fuss about?
thesis: the mythological speech of the bible, taken litterally, is simply meaningless to modern scientific man.. examples: god walking in the garden, punishing adam and his children (justice?!

However, the story of Adam and Eve is something that might be proven or disproved by science, while theories of good and evil would remain the domain of philosophy, would they not? Also, biblical stories, like that of Lot's wife, what's her name, might also be suggested by scientific research, as you suggest. What other biblical stories does science "prove"? A seeming "worldwide" flood? The sun standing still? The Red Sea parting? Yes, there are geological and astrological and oceanic phenomena that demonstrate some of these things may have occurred, but there is no evidence of any god or creator actuating them, only literary references to punishments for the "losers."

RAF - How would you go about establishing scientifically that "god is everything" AND that "god is love" as you seem to have stated? That is a total contradiction if hate exists, isn't it?

""War and that of being a soldier is not for everyone, as it takes a commitment and an understanding that you do not fight for your own glory. You are there for purposes that are larger than yourself. You are in the military to serve the greater common good. The fact that you may die in defense of your country, political policies, good, bad or indifferent is a fact that must be throughly understood."
I think that this is one of the worlds oldest myths. In every generation, mens lives are destroyed because they were told that they were going to war for reason x, and when they get to the line they work out on their own that they're there for reason y. Sometimes an entire generation is deluded into believing that their country is more important than their life. What a load of bollocks. Old men want land or oil or another river or coal or whatever, so they con the young into swapping their lives for it."
I agree, sass my frass. Most wars are about real estate or religion, period. God, gold, and glory. -

"LOL @ MQ! I could just picture that scene.
Pardon my West Coastness but what's a:
Wink and tequilla??
Open Mind is an Inquiring Mind"
A Wink is a brand of citrus soft drink. http://www.amazon.com/Wink-Soda/dp/B0001VS9LA
I think it has a bit of grapefruit, which I usually hate, but it is a very nice, semi-sweet soda pop that's great with liquor. I add a little lime. I'm thinking about graduating to tequila slammers next. I'm having my third wink & tequila of the day, as I type.
